The Malcolm Turnbull government has signalled their intention to create a Australia’s national security architecture ahead of the creation of a new super portfolio, for the leading government conservative, Peter Dutton.
On Monday the prime minister told reporters in Sydney the government was always open to improving the “outstanding” national security and there is “no place for set and forget”.
The making of a new super-portfolio style division with migration minister peter Dutton in charge has been the subject of moving, contention between senior government clergymen for quite a long time.
After months of supposition, senior authorities have confirmed that turnbull could announce the major changes as soon as. This would add the Australian Security Intelligence and the Australian federal police to the current portfolio for border protection and immigration purposes.
But the thought is biggest shake in Australia's national security in decades and is likely to be fiercely debated in cabine many of the cabinet members are understood to oppose the idea.
The mooted super department has been resisted internally by the foreign affairs minister, Julie Bishop, the justice minister, Michael Keenan, and by some senior bureaucrats.
In this week the government is also expected to release the findings an review of the Australian intelligence community.
