Yassmin Abdel-Magied -‘the most publicly hated Muslim in Australia’

The one-time ABC presenter Yassmin Abdel-Magied has written a passionate essay describing herself as “the most publicly hated Muslim in Australia” and has revealed she has been 'deeply and personally' affected by the Anzac Day post controversy.

The prominent activist, who last week described herself as the “most hated Muslim” in the country before announcing she was moving to London, also told Buzzfeed UK that she felt unsafe in Australia following the widespread backlash to some of her public statements.

“Do I reveal that, I get death threats on a daily basis, and I have to reassure my parents that I will be fine, when maybe I won’t be,” she wrote. I feel a little bit betrayed by Australia because it’s my country and these are my country people and it’s my home. To sort of fight for your right to exist in your home country, it’s exhausting.

The 26-year-old said she had “toed the line” in Australian public life for a decade before her infamous on-air spat with Tasmanian senator Jacqui Lambie in February on the ABC’s Q & A program.

Ms Abdel-Magied said the ongoing abuse she has suffered since Anzac Day has affected her “deeply and personally”.

“Many, post-Anzac, said the response wasn’t about me but about what I represent. Whether or not that is true, it has affected my life, deeply and personally.”

In April, she quickly deleted her Anzac Day post and said: 'It was brought to my attention that my last post was disrespectful, and for that, I apologise unreservedly.'
